Psoriasis is a common skin inflammatory disease which may affect the whole body. There is emerging evidence that psoriasis is a risk factor for developing high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, heart attack, and stroke. Atherosclerosis, or the hardening of the blood arteries (possibly leading to heart attack and stroke), is also associated with inflammation in the blood vessels, though how psoriasis may increase risk for atherosclerosis is unclear.

PACI is a prospective 4-year observational study to understand the long-term effect of chronic skin inflammation on blood vessels and the way our bodies handle sugars ('metabolism'). By having access to participants over a long period of time and also during 'flares' of psoriasis, information gathered from PACI will inform participants about their risk of vascular disease and diabetes, as well as increase our understanding of the effects of inflammation on the body.
